I've only had positive experiences with the bike shop. They are honest with me (I am a bit of a bike mechanic myself) and have always stood behind their service. They mostly carry commuter bikes that cater to the on-campus students and some of the roadies, but are more than willing to talk about, e.g. steel frames and quirkier bike miscellany and will gladly order said parts for you at no extra cost.
A 10% discount from being a member of the UCSD bike-commuter "Pedal Club" makes this just about the only bike shop I go to. Very much worth it to support this shop rather than submit to the online faceless wholesale outlets.
