Lesson: you get what you pay for. Not a bad experience overall, but don't expect any extras or even the type of car you request. They really try to up sell you on upgrades at the time of pick up. The guy told me that my car wouldn't even have A/C or power locks and window, when I wouldn't budge with the upgrade, he became visibly frustrated. The "basic" car I got ended up having those features anyway. Also they claim to have unlimited mileage but they say you can't travel beyond a certain radius which was about "200-miles" I asked for clarification, again the agent became flustered. Out of curiosity, I asked how they track that and the agent remarks "Sir, it's 2017 we have our ways." The car's interior was dirty, back seat was stained. I did appreciate though, how thorough the initial inspection was as the agent pointed out scratches and dents that I hadn't noticed.
August 2017 - Rented a car via an online website from Payless Car Rental, San Diego. The online contract called for $203.44 due at the counter. The counter rep went through their sales pitch saying my car insurance wouldn't cover this car rental, I was charged $368.18. When not agreeing with that charge they had me sign an insurance waiver and of course initial in multiple spots. When that was done they ran a charge onto my credit card for $299.90 instead of the agreed upon price of $203.44. I am currently in the middle of a dispute with my credit card company in regards to it. I would not recommend renting from these guys nor trusting any of their employees. I also emailed them multiple times but have not yet received a return call or email. Please read the reviews before renting from them or anyone else for that matter. Oh, by the way, it was the oldest beat up car that I have ever rented. How do you rate someone lower than a 1 when the scale is 1 to 5?
Believe the bad reviews!! We reserved a rental online and was told the security deposit was $300 and the rental was $33/day. Well guess what?? The rental mysteriously went to $55/day AND they wanted $500 for a security deposit. I laughed in his face and told him to keep it. We're not that desperate. We went online and immediately booked with Dollar. Payless Car Rental are vultures, liars, and opportunists. DO NOT rent from here unless you like to be lied to, pressured into upgrades, and overcharged.
Horrible company. Unreliable. Will never rent a car from them again. Would not recommend to anyone. My sister and I reserved a car a week before our trip. The hour that we requested to pick up they sent us an email stating that our car is ready. When we got there, they told us they were all out of cars. “They gave our reserved cars away”. And instead of helping us get another car for the same price we were going to pay, they told us to try other car rentals.
Do not rent a car from these sleezebags. I've never dealt with a company more unscrupulous than this one. I worked with a particular individual behind the counter but they worked together as a group to scam me. They should be shut down. Their model is to get you in the door at a cheap price and then lie to your face over and over until they get the price as high as possible... not try to up-sell, literally tell you LIES to your face..
Then, when I finally got the more expensive intermediate car that I needed, which I shouldn't have had to pay more for, it was really bad. I have rented many cars in my time and this was by far the worst one I've had. Two of the tires were almost bald, one desperately needing replacement, the brakes were pretty worn out, the AC worked but it was making a really annoying clicking sound every time it was on. The car didn't have a license plate, just a sign from Mossy. You could tell it was some sort of Frankenstein car that was put together from many different parts.
Honestly the worst car rental experience by far, the worst car by far. I felt really unsafe driving the car and was actually surprised I was able to return it without any breakdowns or blown tires after two days.
Do not rent from this place at all costs. They really should be shut down.
I ordered a car through an online intermediary that works with rental car companies. I paid for an "intermediate" car. When I arrived they offered me the economy car and said that was their intermediate. I told them that every other rental place classifies this car as economy, below intermediate. They said this was considered their intermediate (online I ordered what was called an "intermediate", considered a Corolla or equivalent. Every other place considers Corollas intermediates so I was happy with that, but of course they didn't have any Corollas when I got there and they said that this tiny economy car was the equivalent). If I wanted the car I thought I was getting then it would cost me $15 more per day. Then they told me that the insurance I ordered online through the intermediary would not work for their cars, even though it has worked with every other rental car company I've dealt with, so I would have to get their insurance. A total scam.
